Our Story

It begins with a simple round dish used for cooking in ancient Rome called a patina. In time, the word came to mean not just the vessel, but the food it held. As its meaning evolved patina came to describe the seasoned surface of a well-loved pan, the mark of meals shared and memories made.

From hearth to home, the word grew to express the unique finish and beauty of an aged material or object, softened by touch or deepened by sun and season, after passing through countless hands and years.

And in the cellar, patina found new meaning still — a fitting name for the layered complexity and depth of flavour that time and oak impart to wine in barrel aging.

Whether referring to a dining table, cast-iron pan or a matured bottle of wine, a patina is the result of interaction with nature, humanity and time; turning something simple into something soulful.

As a name, it captures the true essence of our store: an emphasis on artisanal quality, a reverence for nature, and a welcoming, down-to-earth atmosphere.

It also tells our story — one that celebrates the rituals of cooking, eating and dining as moments to pause, honour the seasons and gather in ways that bring us closer to the land, our food, and each other.

"Don't clear too quickly, let the empty plates sit a bit."
